To Be Determined

Day 2922. Eight full years of operation.
Harold’s skill as far as food-making went pretty much stopped at putting hot-pockets in the microwave. So, while the vanilla cupcake was store-bought, he at least put the icing and candle on. He felt a little silly getting a cupcake for a machine, but it was always more than that. More than just a machine. As such, he felt the need to have a small celebration.
He found the old napkin Nathan wrote on and cork he’d popped on that particular day. (Yes, he had to take it from Will’s boxes of Nathan’s things, but he was sure he wouldn’t mind.) He set them out along with the cupcake as a sort of remembrance. So Nathan could be there, too.
He was sure that Mr. Reese would question why Harold was sitting there, staring at the monitors with a cupcake that had a candle in it, an old paper napkin and a cork, but he didn’t care. If anything, it would be a nice morning conversation opener, contrasting with the usual “we have a new number” sort of greeting.
"I’m not sure if you’ll understand what this really means, or even why I’m doing it," Harold whispered to The Machine. "But… Happy Birthday."
He blew out the candle for it and slightly smiled.

In Person of Interest canon, today is The Machine’s “birthday”. I’ve wanted to experiment with textures and such for a while now, so I thought this could be a nice exercise. Didn’t quite turn out as I’d hoped, but it works.
Also in part dedicated to fellow irrelevant darklysnarky, who also has a birthday today.
